4 Nutrient-Packed Foods to Combat Flu & Virus Season

Posted by Amina AlTai on

We are having unseasonably warm weather here in NYC and I definitely can't complain.  However, the spiking temperatures will soon be followed by frost and it's the vacillating temperatures that often cause our immunity to weaken and for us to get a cold or the dreaded flu!   If you want to protect yourself this fall, here are a few must have foods for your immunity!

Aloe Vera

This popular succulent is usually a favorite of sun-kissed beauty aficionados.  However, they are even more potent at boosting immunity!  The mannose polysaccharides found is fresh aloe vera are part of a family of essential glyconutrients that the body uses to maintain a healthy immune system.  Think of them as bacteria, fungus and virus-fighting powerhouses.  When it comes to aloe vera, fresh is always best, though you can also buy it in the form of supplements and in healthy beverages.

Camu Camu Berries

When it comes to potent vitamin C, most people's go-to is a big ole glass of OJ!  And yes, oranges have some vitamin C, but that glass or orange juice can have upwards of 30 grams of sugar! YIKES!  So, if you feel your coming down with a dreaded cold, start thinking about getting a little camu camu.  This cute little lemon-sized fruit is native to the South American tropical rainforest and has more vitamin C than any other botanical source.  It's about 4% vitamin C whereas your typical citrus fruit runs closer to 1/2 a percent.  This fab fruit is also loaded with calcium, potassium, iron, amino acids, thiamin, and niacin.  I like Navitas Natural Camu Powder and blend it straight into my favorite smoothies for a little extra boost.

Noni

These alien-looking superfruits are native to the Polynesian Islands and can be found in local Asian markets.  The taste can be an acquired one, but when it comes to boosting immunity, they’re hard to beat. Like aloe vera, they contain long-chain polysaccharides which reportedly stimulate white blood cells for immunity support.  I love 100% pure Virgin Noni Juice, which like the camu camu can be added straight to your smoothie du jour.

Reishi Mushrooms

These are not your run-of-the-mill shrooms.  The reishi mushroom is dubbed a “superherb” and for very good reason!   A cornerstone of Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years, reishi has been used to support our immune systems by protecting us from bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and even mold. One of my go-to winter supplements is Metagenics® Mycotaki supplement.
